Training and Trial Policy
Effective March 6, 2014
Dog training—particularly with large and powerful breeds—carries a serious obligation to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, fairness, and humane treatment. It is critical to ensure the safety of all participants and provide a positive and humane experience for the dogs.
Abusive or inhumane training is a matter of personal responsibility, defined by actions rather than equipment.
Abuse can occur even with the simplest tools, such as a leash or standard collar (chain, fabric, or leather). The focus must always remain on the manner in which tools are used, not merely on the tools themselves.
Policy Principles:
Training and trial procedures must always provide a safe and humane experience for the dog, the handler, and all others present (people and animals alike).
Each individual is responsible for training in a safe, humane manner and for encouraging others to do the same.
If abusive actions are observed, individuals are expected to intervene and/or seek assistance from civil authorities as appropriate.
Cases of abuse will be reviewed by the AWMA Board of Inquiry. Tolerating or ignoring abusive behavior is, by default, an endorsement of such behavior.
Core Values:
The appearance of humane, sportsmanlike conduct is important — but more critical is that every handler and participant genuinely embody the AWMA’s values:
Commitment to sportsmanship
Dedication to safety and well-being of our dogs
Respect for the spirit of fair and humane training and competition
